Three sessions: T-Th July 5-7 1:30-3:30pm at the Mark Morris Dance Center (in person and online) Our upcoming annual summer workshop purposefully confronts the limitations of Isadora Duncan's legacy by inviting and including ALL curious movers of ALL abilities and diverse backgrounds to join us as we re-imagine one of Duncan's works from 1920. This workshop offers both remote and in-person access and a discounted student rate. The work contains the seeds of modernism as it looks at immigration and relocation. Each session will begin with a full warm-up which focuses on Duncan’s use of breath and weight followed by an exploration of the selected repertory work. We invite dancers and curious movers (ages 18+) of all abilities, styles and backgrounds to join us as we dig into dance history while engaging with the present. Full 3 session workshop: 60. Students/seniors: 30. Single in person session: 25. Online: 15./session On Thursday, July 7 participants may invite guests to watch a presentation of the repertoire at 3pm
NOTE COVID 19 guidelines: All students and guests entering the studio must show proof of vaccination. Masks are optional in the studio but must be worn in common areas.
About the work: Polonaise in C minor The dark brooding nature of Chopin’s music underlies the rise and fall of the undulating torsos as a group of dancers advances forward in close proximity. They seem to be wanderers, searchers or refugees moving cautiously amid unspecified danger. They could be migrants from any part of the world seeking refuge from oppression in 1920 or 2022. This work will be re-imagined for a dance film project in 2023. This three day workshop will be led by Catherine Gallant and Loretta Thomas photos: top-REUTERS middle-Arnold Genthe, below r.
